Step away from current trends and embrace a time-tested approach that addresses what many players are missing:
Strong foundation
Clean technique
Ear training
Deep understanding
In these subscription lessons, Tomo tries to move players away from their reliance on tablature or chord diagrams. Rather than thinking of scales and chords as shapes, players learn to hear/recognize the music.
Whether you're a beginner or an advanced player, Tomo's lessons offer valuable insights and practical advice to enhance your playing and deepen your understanding of music.
While most teachers give students what they want, Tomo provides students with what they need.
There's no shame in revisiting the basics! Reviewing something you’ve already learned does not mean you’re going backwards. Consider your foundation to be like your heart – fueling your progress. The stronger it is, the more you can challenge yourself. If you neglect it, you likely won’t get very far!
Learning guitar is not a race! Do your future self a favor and move at your own pace. Prioritize the depth and quality of your understanding over cramming as much information as possible. Speeding through lessons may cause you to overlook key details!
Discover joy in the process! Learning guitar isn't a one-size-fits-all deal – you have the freedom to make choices along the way. Approach each lesson with curiosity and take small, dedicated steps. Getting caught up in the final destination can make it difficult to truly enjoy the path you're on!
There are many paths to wisdom! With Tomo as your teacher and mentor, you have nothing but good choices.
Q: How are Tomo’s lessons on Guitar Wisdom different than his lessons on YouTube?
A: Tomo’s lessons on Guitar Wisdom are presented at a higher quality and with a single purpose: to educate. Each lesson focuses in on one topic, giving you detailed insights and demonstrations. In contrast to Tomo’s YouTube videos, these lessons are filmed using two cameras to offer wide-angle and close-up views of Tomo as he teaches. Plus, the lesson videos are edited to include helpful on-screen text for you to jot down charts and key points.
Q: Is there a specific order to follow when doing the lessons?
A: In short, the answer is no. Similar to Tomo’s approach in private lessons, he presents students with choices. Instead of a fixed 1-10 lesson sequence, offering choices empowers students to explore, learn, and evolve by reflecting on their learning needs, honestly assessing their understanding, and experimenting with various approaches to find what works best for them.
*In an effort to help our students get started, we’ve created general recommendations on our site. When you subscribe, we recommend watching the videos in our Q&A/Proficiency section. Our students find Tomo’s video, “Foundation Test Level 1” to be extremely helpful in making a plan of action.
Q: What are the benefits of the sight-reading series?
A: Tomo’s lessons using "A Modern Method for Guitar, Volume 1" by William G. Leavitt, provide students with structured exercises to improve technique. According to both Tomo and our students, this book offers more than just sight-reading practice; it also helps in developing patience and dedication, expanding fretboard knowledge, and refining picking and muting skills.
