Tomo Fujita is a renowned guitarist and professor at Berklee College of Music recognized for his expressive playing and engaging lessons. In recent years, he has expanded his impact on guitar education by utilizing platforms such as his YouTube channel, TomoFujitaMusic, and his online lesson site, Tomo Fujita Guitar Wisdom. His positive spirit and genuine enthusiasm make him a beloved figure in the guitar community.
Tomo Fujita moved to the U.S. in 1986 to attend Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship. In 1991 he became the first Japanese winner of the "Boston Guitarist Competition," and in 1993, he began teaching in the guitar department at Berklee. He has developed a great reputation as a master private teacher, as well as a crowd-pleasing performer who has shared the stage with the likes of Phil Collins, bassist Darryl Jones (Miles Davis, Sting, Rolling Stones), Ronnie Earl, and Mighty Sam McClain, just to name a few. He has also enjoyed a stint in the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winning musical RENT.
Tomo has written and arranged the music featured on his albums. Although he creates instrumental music, he treats his guitar as a vocalist. He uses clean tone and dynamic phrasing to deliver expressive playing that speaks directly from his heart.

Tomo has performed with some of the best, including Will Lee, Steve Gadd, Bernard Purdie, Steve Jordan, Susan Tedeschi, Phil Collins, John Mayer, James Gadson, Travis Carlton, James Genus, and Darryl Jones. When he is not touring, he likes to sit in with others, like Eric Gales, Josh Smith, Kirk Fletcher, Matt Schofield, and Pigeons Playing Ping Pong. Most recently, Tomo had the opportunity to sit in with Juanes in Boston and Cory Wong in Tokyo.
Tomo has authored a variety of instructional books — most of them in Japanese. However, he believes that English-speaking people can learn much from his “Solo Etudes” book. This book features charts, including guitar tablature, for Tomo’s original compositions such as “Just Funky” and “Kyoto”.
Tomo has created and/or co-produced many instructional DVDs with Rittor Music and others, in both Japanese and English. One English-language DVD that many players find particularly helpful is “Accelerate Your Guitar Playing”. This DVD was a joint project of Berklee Press, Rittor Music and Hal Leonard Corporation
Tomo has been a mentor to many talented individuals over the years. Some of his notable former students from Berklee include Eric Krasno, Adam Smirnoff, John Mayer, Michael Lemmo, and Tyler Larson.
Outside of Berklee, Tomo enjoys sharing his expertise through private lessons, guiding artists such as UK musician and producer Tom Misch and 26-time Latin Grammy Award-winning artist Juanes. As touring artists, Tom Misch and Juanes have also benefited from Tomo’s online lesson site, Guitar Wisdom.
Listen to Tomo’s story captured by Ibanez.
Tomo teamed up with Ibanez to create a “student guitar” that was high-quality, easy to use, and most of all more affordable than guitars of its caliber.
